January 22: Good Reads

Happy new year! This was the second meeting of 2022! 🙂 🎉

Toastmaster Sarah chose the theme Good Reads, as she explained it: “Our theme for this week will be “Good Reads”! What books or stories have inspired you? Doesn’t matter if it’s magazines, manga, or mysteries, be ready to share what you like to read.”.

Sergeant at Arms Bill Scott started the meeting on time, at 7:45am PST and shared with us zoom etiquette rules.

The word of the day, presented by Grammarian Steven was:

volition, the power or choosing or determining.
Example:  I accomplished my new year’s resolution of my own volition.

Sarah was in charge of timing speakers, impromptu speeches and evaluators.

Our speakers for the day were:

Ahmad, presenting a speech about his experiences, fears, and games as a child titled: “The day I was almost kidnapped“.

Isabella, presenting a project to give and receive feedback, a very personal story about how she went from not having support to pursue her interests in writing, to receiving positive feedback for the stories she created, a speech titled: “How to be a writer“.

Jamie, presenting a storytelling project, a contest-quality speech about how her brother was there to help her score points in video games as a child, and how she had the opportunity to return the favor and help him later in life, a speech titled: “Unplug the controller“.

Impromptu Table Topics Master of the day Jinendra prepared questions that helped us deliver 1 – 2 minute impromptu speeches:

– Cris â€“ when was the first time you realized you started to lose hair? or what was the worst haircut you ever had?
– Traci â€“ if you won the lottery what would be your first expense?
– Katie â€“ what kind of phone was your first cellphone and how would you use it in today’s world?
– Albert â€“ which of the seven wonders would you want to visit first?
– Moises – what is your first memory as a kid that you recollect?

January 15: The Things I want to know/do

December 18: UP

This is it! The last meeting of the year 2021 ! 🙂 🎉

Toastmaster Jovica chose the theme UP, as he explained in his own words: “Think about what is that in human kind that inspires us to go up, up, up. Even when we reach the bottom of our lives the only way from there is to go up. Moving up is being hopeful. Moving up is striving to reach goals. Moving up inspires others.

Word of the day, presented by Grammarian Jamie was:

gumption, common sense, horse sense.
Example:  It took a lot of gumption to speak up for yourself like that .

Affan was in charge of timing speakers, impromptu speeches and evaluators.

Our speaker for the day was:

Paula, presenting a speech about her experience as an Asset Manager, followed by a question and answer session.

Impromptu Table Topics Master of the day Steven asked what our decisions of 2021 said about us:

– Ahmed – what did your music selection of 2021 say about you?
– Moises – what did your outfits of 2021 say about you?
– Jovica – what did your shopping habits say about you in 2021?
– Jamie – what would you say your tv/movie viewing says about you in 2021?
– Bill – what would you say that your habits say about you in 2021?
– Affan – what would you say that your hobbies say about you in 2021?
– Paula – what would you say your podcast listening says about you in 2021?

December 11: Themeless.

For the 12/11 meeting, Toastmaster Steven decided to have a meeting without a theme, that’s right Themeless.

Sergeant at Arms Bill Scott shared with us zoom etiquette rules. Quote of the day was:

“The color of springtime is in the flowers; the color of winter is in the imagination.”

Word of the day, presented by Grammarian Petar was:

bodacious, excellent, admirable, or attractive.
Example:  “the restaurant serves bodacious grilled lobster”.

Jovica was in charge of timing speakers, impromptu speeches and evaluators.

Our three speakers for the day were:

Joseph presenting stories to demonstrate communication styles in a 5 to 7 minutes speech, where he talked about the main problem of communication being the illusion that it has taken place.

Jamie presenting a 5 to 7 minutes speech titled “Wanderlust for Thoughtful Travel”, inviting us to travel and bring back the greatest souvenir of all, a broader perspective.

Isabella presenting a 5 to 7 minutes speech titled “What I learned from evaluator”, where she shared points to look for when being a speech evaluator.

Impromptu Table Topics Master of the day Saurabh asked interesting questions to elicit 1 to 2 minutes speeches:

– Jovica â€“ imagine you received 1 million dollars, how would you spend it?
– Cris â€“ if you have an option to go to the past or the future what would you choose and why?
– Petar â€“ what’s the most sensible thing you have heard someone saying?
– Steven â€“ what’s a belief that you hold with which many people would disagree?
– Traci â€“ what is number one motivator in your life right now?

Evaluators Sarah, Bill and Paula evaluated our speakers following the sandwich approach: what you did well, areas of improvement, what you did well.
