There are only a handful of objective truths in the world. Humans are 70% water, Saturday follows Friday, and Seattle Sunrise Toastmasters is the funnest place to improve your public speaking. This week’s meeting was a perfect example.
A battery of our club members convened again and our toastmaster was Dick. The theme was The best of times, the worst of times. After some brief banter about the theme, Dick introduced our first speaker Nagisa. Nagisa’s speech title was “The World Isn’t a Scary Place.” It was about stories in the news about terrible things happening to tourists traveling abroad, but that bad things can happen in one’s own neighborhood. She urged people to take advantage of opportunities to travel and also threw in a few tips for staying safe when traveling.
Our second speaker was Michelle. Michelle delivered her first speech in Toastmasters titled “The Grass is Greener…Here”. She shared her story about moving to Venezuela, getting married, and then … returning to the United States to escape Venezuela’s political instability.
Our final speaker was Rich. Rich delivered an improved version of a speech he had presented earlier this year titled “Eddie and Chester”. It’s always fun to watch a speaker improve a speech over time and Rich’s speech was no exception!
Jun Lei was our table topics master and she introduced an interesting twist. After capturing information from the audience, each table topics speaker was presented a person, place, and action then asked to incorporate them into their 30 second table topics response. Not easy, but table topics isn’t for the faint at heart!
Johan, Sonja, and Petra were our evaluators. Madeleine served as our general evaluator. She reminded the evaluators that it is important to address feedback to the speaker you are evaluating. “Address them in the second person using ‘you’ rather than the third person.”
At the conclusion of the meeting, we inducted our newest member, Violetta! Welcome to the group. It’s the funnest place to improve your public speaking … that is, if you’re okay with us using funnest as a superlative.
Our next meeting is scheduled for 5/25
