At Seattle Sunrise Toastmasters, we practice proper use of the English language and try to expand our vocabulary. It is the Grammarian’s job to help facilitate these during the meeting.
Prior to the meeting
- Select a “word of the day.” It should be a word that 1) helps members increase their vocabulary 2) can be incorporated easily into conversation. Examples include: perseverate, brio, endemic, gadabout, & epigram.
- Create a display for the word you selected. Be sure to include: the word, its type of speech, and brief definition. Use a font size that is visible from a distance.
- Prepare a brief explanation of the duties of the grammarian.
At the meeting
- Place the word display at the front of the room
During the meeting
- When introduced, announce the “word of the day.” State its part of speech, its definition, and use it in a sentence. Invite members and guests to knock on the table as acknowledgement each time the word is used.
- Briefly explain the role of Grammarian (to record correct, memorable, and incorrect uses of English)
- Document any misuse of the language including: incomplete sentences, incorrect grammar, distracting phrasing, etc.
- When called on by the General Evaluator, stand up and relay what you recorded during the meeting. Try to offer an example of correct usage, if possible.
